What is Trans Awareness Week and Why is it Important?

Every November, Trans Awareness Week calls us to recognise, support, and uplift trans and non-binary communities. It leads up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, a day honouring the lives of transgender people lost to violence and discrimination. This week serves as a reminder that allyship isn’t confined to one week—it’s a continuous journey of empathy, advocacy, and meaningful action.

Why Trans Awareness Week Matters

Trans Awareness Week provides a platform for education on the issues impacting trans and non-binary people, including discrimination, exclusion, and lack of access to basic services. Studies from organisations like The Trevor Project highlight that over half of transgender and non-binary youth have seriously considered suicide in recent years, often due to social rejection and discrimination. Awareness this week can help reduce stigma, increase understanding, and create a pathway toward a more inclusive society.
