LGBT+ History Month

February is LGBT+ History Month

LGBT+ History Month was founded in 2004 by Sue Sanders and Paul Patrick as a way to highlight and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Sue Sanders, an LGBTQ+ rights advocate and educator, envisioned the month as a way to raise awareness, foster understanding, and challenge homophobia and transphobia, especially in educational settings.

The theme for this year, "Activism and Social Change", is a timely reflection on the ongoing work of LGBTQ+ activists throughout history and the current fight for equality. Activism has been central to advancing LGBTQ+ rights, from early pioneers like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, to modern-day advocates continuing to push for societal and legal reforms. This theme honours the transformative impact that activism has had in securing rights, visibility, and acceptance for LGBTQ+ people, and encourages individuals to continue striving for change in the face of persistent challenges.
